e-mail

The Centre for Information and Media Technology Services (ZIM) at Paderborn University offers various e-mail services.

Uni-Mail

The Centre for Information and Media Technologies (ZIM) offers all students, staff and guests of Paderborn University a personal e-mail address in the university namespace as well as an associated mailbox. The central mail service "Uni-Mail" is operated and maintained by the ZIM on the server mail.uni-paderborn.de.

The service is realised with open source software and enables both individual mail traffic and collaborative work with emails. In addition, working groups, institutions and projects can create and administer their own mail domains.

Access to the personal mailbox is possible via the IMAP protocol; the connection between the mail programme and server is secured by SSL encryption. Alternatively, the mail service can also be used conveniently via the web interface: → webmail.uni-paderborn.de

Exchange

ZIM operates an Exchange OnPremise service that can be used by working groups for appointment coordination, contact management, task administration and joint administration of resources. The prerequisite for use is an existing ZIM user account with a directory for private data and a user agreement concluded between the working group and ZIM. The user agreement defines the service for the individual working group. The agreement specifies the contact persons and the billing modalities for the service.

Use of the Exchange service is subject to a charge.

Please contact zim@uni-paderborn.de for detailed information .

Other services that can facilitate group communication and collaboration are also included. The use of a fully-fledged Office 365 software package is included.

The Microsoft 365 service uses Office 365, a platform provided by Microsoft for e-mail and online collaboration.

Mailing lists

Mailing lists support you in repeatedly sending emails to a (large) group of recipients. The service includes functions for administration of recipients, rule-compliant sending to many recipients and automatic error processing. Employees, working groups or project groups can use mailing lists. The service is realised with open source software on servers at ZIM.

ZIM offers you the option of creating and administering mailing lists. In simple terms, a mailing list is a list of e-mail addresses. If you send an e-mail to a mailing list, it will be distributed to all addresses on the list. The system supports you by automatically processing errors.

If you need a mailing list, please send an e-mail with the desired list name, a short description (approx. 1 line) and the e-mail address of the future list administrator (address at the university) to zim@uni-paderborn.de. The reference to the university should be included in the short description.

The mailing lists are created in the domain lists.uni-paderborn.de. The registered list administrator receives a message with the data necessary for administration.

Departments with their own mail domains have the option of registering additional e-mail addresses for a list.

Instructions in our help wiki:

Warning about phishing mails

Unfortunately, criminals are always trying to get hold of your access data by sending fake emails asking you to register on a website. The anti-spam system has to learn new spam and phishing messages before the first e-mails of a new wave are delivered to the recipients.

Please be vigilant. You can find tips on recognising fraud attempts on the page Combating phishing e-mails.

If you are unsure whether you have received a regular e-mail or a phishing e-mail, please forward the e-mail to zim@upb.de with a corresponding question.
